A strix is a nocturnal bird that preys on humans, feeding on blood much like a vampire. A strix may also be placated or diverted with the fresh raw meat of a cow, a pig or a sheep. Strixes make a terrible shriek shortly before attacking, which is employed as a diversion. The first strixes were said to be cannibals who betrayed the gods and were cursed into their birdlike forms. Strixes may resemble owls.
